New show based on 80s Eddie Murphy movie has been canned due to insufficient interest from US TV networks

A TV show based on the iconic 80s Eddie Murphy action comedy Beverly Hills Cop has been canned after the concept failed to attract sufficient interest from US TV networks.

The proposed series would have seen Murphy appear only occasionally as Axel Foley, with the character now elevated to the role of a senior policeman in his home city, Detroit. Foley's son was due to be the street-smart central character.

Creator Shawn Ryan, with support from Murphy, is said to have pitched the show as an hour-long police procedural with strong comic elements. However, US networks balked at green-lighting the project, despite initial interest.

"Sad to report that efforts to land Beverly Hills Cop pilot at another network have failed," said Ryan, creator of TV show The Shield, on Twitter. "This iteration is dead for now."

Murphy starred in three Beverly Hills Cop films between 1984 and 1994, with Tony Scott and John Landis following Martin Brest in the director's chair. While the TV series will not move forward, Ryan said there was now a good chance Foley or his heir might return to the big screen in future. "Good news for fans of franchise is that the pilot tested so well, it has caused Paramount to put another BHC movie into development," he wrote.

A previous attempt at a fourth movie was briefly in development in 2008. However, the film famously came off the rails when proposed director Brett Ratner suggested it would eschew the original trilogy's edgy, potty-mouthed style for a more family-friendly approach.
