'Back to BlackBrick is memorable, haunting and a lot of fun. At some points you may have no idea'

I was surprised to hear that this is Sarah Moore Fitzgerald's first novel and I hope this is not the last. Back to BlackBrick is memorable, haunting and a lot of fun. At some points you may have no idea. At some points you may have no idea what the author is trying to get at, but rest assured it is an experience worth sticking with.

Cosmo is in need of desperate help as his grandfather's memory is slowly going, but he feels that the efforts of both himself and the doctors aren't enough to save him. When his grandfather hands him the key to a local abbey, Cosmo feels as though it is his duty to venture into BlackBrick Abbey to discover the truth of his grandfather's past.

The concept is simple and well executed and, although the bulk of the action is set within the abbey's walls which I won't spoil, it has deep characters and vivid locations to go with it. Each of the characters are different and are put over in ways that make you feel exactly how Moore Fitzgerald intended. There are also a few major twists and turns as the narrative plays out.

I really don't want to spoil much of this book because I don't want to give away the shocks, turns and screams for when you read it. I will say that parents should be careful as to how their child is when they read this book. The beginning invites readers of all ages in with its light-hearted atmosphere; however the later chapters contain very disturbing scenes that I won't forget for a long time. I realise this book is meant for teenagers, but just a word of warning there. Otherwise this is a book everyone should read at some point for a truly breath taking experience.

8.5/10
